Finding Paths between Colourings

چکیده
Given a 3-colourable graph G and two proper vertex 3-colourings α and β of G, consider the following question : is it possible to transform α into β by recolouring vertices of G one at a time, making sure that all intermediate colourings are proper 3-colourings? We prove that this question is answerable in polynomial time. We do so by characterising the instances G,α, β where the transformation is possible; the proof of this characterisation is via an algorithm that either finds a sequence of recolourings between α and β, or exhibits a structure which proves that no such sequence exists. In the case that a sequence of recolourings does exist, the algorithm uses O(|V (G)|2) recolouring steps and in many cases returns a shortest sequence of recolourings. We also exhibit a class of instances G,α, β that require Ω(|V (G)|2) recolouring steps.

Paths between colourings of sparse graphs
The reconfiguration graph $R_k(G)$ of the $k$-colourings of a graph~$G$ has as vertex set the set of all possible $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are adjacent if they differ on exactly one vertex. We give a short proof of the following theorem of Bousquet and Perarnau (\emph{European Journal of Combinatorics}, 2016). Let $d$ and $k$ be positive integers, $k \geq d + 1$. For every $\eps...
متن کاملExchange Symmetries in Motzkin Path and Bargraph Models of Copolymer Adsorption
In a previous work [26], by considering paths that are partially weighted, the generating function of Dyck paths was shown to possess a type of symmetry, called an exchange relation, derived from the exchange of a portion of the path between weighted and unweighted halves. This relation is particularly useful in solving for the generating functions of certain models of vertex-coloured Dyck path...
متن کاملFinding Paths Between Graph Colourings: PSPACE-Completeness and Superpolynomial Distances
Suppose we are given a graph G together with two proper vertex k-colourings of G, α and β. How easily can we decide whether it is possible to transform α into β by recolouring vertices of G one at a time, making sure we always have a proper k-colouring of G? This decision problem is trivial for k = 2, and decidable in polynomial time for k = 3. Here we prove it is PSPACE-complete for all k ≥ 4....
متن کاملThe Glauber Dynamics for Colourings of Bounded Degree Trees
We study the Glauber dynamics Markov chain for k-colourings of trees with maximum degree ∆.For k ≥ 3, we show that the mixing time on every tree is at most n . This bound istight up to the constant factor in the exponent, as evidenced by the complete tree. Our proof uses aweighted canonical paths analysis and a variation of the block dynamics in which we exploit the differing<lb...
متن کاملGeodesic stability for memoryless binary long-lived consensus
The determination of the stability of the long-lived consensus problem is a fundamental open problem in distributed systems. We concentrate on the memoryless binary case with geodesic paths. We offer a conjecture on the stability in this case, exhibit two classes of colourings which attain this conjectured bound, and improve the known lower bounds for all colourings. We also introduce a related...
